Broken Promises

Chapter 5

Two Weeks Later

Julia looked outside.  The noon sun beat down on Caspian’s naked back as he pulled weeds.  Her heart beat wildly as she watched his muscles move underneath his skin.

She lightly ran her fingers over his mating mark and sighed.  For the first time in her life she was truly happy.  Though their relations had not gone past a heated kiss, it was as if they had been together for years.

She had fallen into his life without as must as a hitch.  At night Caspian would curl around her until she was asleep then run the country side looking for hunters.

Luckily for her he had not found any.  He had a rambunctious sprit that she had not seen in ages.  He cared for the villagers even though they shunned him.  Caspian was her perfect mate.

But she knew that all great things must end.  Either he would die on one of his hunts or old age would catch up with him before she was ready to let him go.

She knew it was impossible to make Caspian an immortal, but at a price she might be able to extend his life by a few hundred years.

Smiling she walked from the house.  She watched as Caspian’s head snapped up.  She wanted to laugh at how in tuned he was to her scent.

With one fluid motion he stood and turned to face her.  A smile shone from his handsome face as he wiped dirt from his hands.

“What do I have the honor of your company?”  he asked smoothly.

Trying not to laugh she made her way over to him, holding her skirt high so not to get it dirty.

“I can’t just be out here just to visit?”  she asked smiling.

Caspian laughed and grabbed her arm pulling her to him.

“Stop you’re going to get me dirty,”  she laughed.

She lightly pushed at his shirt and he released her.  Picking up her long skirt she raced away from him.  She did not have to turn around to know that Caspian was following her, she could feel it in her soul.

It did not take long for him to catch her, but she was not really trying to flee from him.  With a roar he jumped making her topple over her front feet.

He wrapped his arms around her and quickly flipped them so he was the one to hit the hard ground instead of her.  He landed with a grunt, but it was covered by a giggle that slipped from her mouth.

Before she could blink she was on the ground on her back and Caspian was hovering over her.  A light sheen of sweat dotted his brow as he leaned in a brushed his lips against her’s.

She smiled as gently hit his chest with her fist.

“Oww,” Caspian whined. ‘What was that for?”

“For getting my dress dirty,”  she answered.

“I bought you that dress and if I want to get it dirty or even rip it to pieces, that is my right,”  he cooed.

She squealed and tried to push him off of her, but he did not move.  She knew that she could easily remove him, but she did not mind him feeling all dominant at the moment.

Caspian purred and rubbed his cheek against her’s raking his scent onto her skin.  Then out of no where he just stiffened.  His body became taunt as a strange scent flouted through the air.

Snarling Caspian turned to look over his shoulder.  She watched as he slowly picked himself off of her and stood.  She had never in her life seen him appear so large.

She looked around him to see at least twenty men standing at the edge of the forest.  She knew in an instant that they were all demons, but that was not what made a chill run up her spine.

One of the demons, the largest of the bunch, was staring right at her.  His face was badly scared, but she could see his violet eyes as clear as day.  His short curly red hair made her blood freeze in her veins.

It was the same color as Caspian’s.

“Seth!”  Caspian growled.

Caspian looked at his mother’s killer.  He stood not thirty feet from him, but that was not what made his fury boil over.  It was Seth’s eyes locked on his mate.

“It’s nice to see you again my son,”  Seth sneered.

Seth stepped forward and before he could stop himself a roar burst from his lips.  It was so powerful that Julia even flinched away from him.

“You are not my father!”  he snapped.

He could feel his claws and fangs lengthening.  His eyes began to blur as blood lust filled his senses.

“How could you say such a thing?” Seth laughed. “Didn’t you know that blood never lies?”

One second he was looking into his father’s eyes and the next, Julia’s back.

“You better leave before I make you,”  his mate snapped.

His blood lust quickly jerked back as he watched her.

“Who do you think you are, Human?”  Seth growled.

Julia did not even shutter at Seth’s voice.  She just glared at him as if he was a misbehaving child.

“I’m Caspian’s mate and I am as far from human as they come,”  Julia snarled.

He had never seen her like that.  He could feel the energy radiating off of her body.  She had even started to glow a bit.

“What are you?”  asked Seth.

He could hear the terror that filled Seth’s voice.  His father stood frozen as Julia stepped forward.  He looked past his mate to see that all the demons were fleeing back into the forest.

“I am your worst nightmare,”  his mate growled.

Julia seemed to let her control go a slight bit more.  The glow turned into a full blown explosion of light.  He even had to look away from her because she was hurting his eyes.

He heard Seth’s cries then silence.  The sound of running foots steps and strangled screams filled the air. Then almost instantly the light was gone and Seth was no where to be seen.

He looked at his mate to see her chest heaving as she forced air through her lungs.  She did not look at him at first, but kept her eyes on the forest.  After a few seconds though Julia’s eyes turned to look at him.

“I’m sorry,”  Julia whispered.

He stared at her not knowing what to say.

“But I did not want to loose you,” his mate whimpered. “You must hate me right now.”

He watched as she crumbled to the ground.  Sobs flew from her as she rocked back and forth.

“Julia,”  he whispered.

He walked over to her and carefully picked her up.  She clung to his neck as if afraid that he might drop her.  His mate continued to sob into his neck as he carried her up the stairs and into the house.

He tried to lay her on the bed, but she refused to let go.  Knowing it was a loosing battle he kicked off his boots and climbed into bed with her.

His mate wrapped herself around him as he ran his finger tips over her back.

“I could never hate you.  You are my mate, my life,”  he whispered into her ear.

Julia finally looked at him, her eyes still flowing with tears.

“I am so sorry,”  his mate whimpered again.

He wanted to stop her crying, but did not know what to do.  His tiger whined and clawed at his stomach to be let out, but he could not.

Julia pressed her face into his chest and trembled and that was it.  He did not let his tiger out, but he did the next best thing, he let it drive.

The second his tiger came into control their lips were pressed against his mates.  They trembled under their, but now instead of cries, moans tumbled from her mouth.

Their fingers slowly began to unlace the back of her dress.

“Caspian?”  Julia moaned.

A growl was all his tiger said before they were on her.

Julia’s body screamed as she stepped out of bed.  Caspian grumbled in his sleep before settling back down.  As she crept away from him she noticed that she was sore in places that she did not know could get sore.

But even though she was sore and raw, she was happy.  Caspian did not hate her, even though she could not understand why.

She had kept him away from the man that had killed his mother, but she had been selfish and scared the man away.

“Father, is this what you meant?”  she asked. “Do I stay with Caspian?”  .

“Follow your heart, my child.  He is your destiny, but how it plays out is up to you,”  answered God.

“Thank you, Father,”  she whispered.

She turned and looked back at the bed.  Caspian was sprawled on top of it.  His chest rose up and down with his breathing, but when her eyes made it back up to his face his eyes were open.

He stared at her as that familiar smile slid across his lips.

“What are you doing up?”  Caspian purred.

“I….  I….”  she stuttered.

“I am not through with you,” he growled.

Before she knew it she was on her back on the bed and Caspian was above her.  He smiled as he leaned down to touch his lips to her’s.

Broken Promises

Chapter 4

Julia could not believe her ears.  Caspian sat before her bleeding out his side and he had asked her to stay with him.  She knew how hard it must have been to state that he needed someone. But she was glad it had been her.

“Of course I’ll stay with you.  Who else will care of you why’ll you’re hurt?”  she asked.

Caspian stared at her for a moment and she slowly got the impression that that was not what he meant.

“Thank you,”  he said with a sexy grin forming on his face.

“You’re very welcome,”  she said back.

Eight Days Later

Caspian stepped from his porch into the fresh morning air.  Julia stood beside him just incase he stumbled, but he knew he would not.  He was in perfect health, but he had dragged the process on a little longer than it had to be.

He stepped away from his little nurse and took in his surrounds.  Everything was calm, but his instincts kicked in.  Deep in his gut he knew something was going to happen today, but what, he did not know.

“What’s wrong?”  Julia asked.

He looked back at her to see she had not moved towards him, as if sensing that she needed to keep her distance.

“I don’t know,”  he answered truthfully.

As the day went by the feeling became more and more apparent.  He had even snapped at Julia, which he had apologized for about three hundred times.

He watched the forest with a stead eye cataloging every movement, and every catsumy that he saw.  Then as a light breeze past over him he smelled it.

“Jaeger!”  he snarled.

Stepping out of the forest like death itself was Jaeger and twenty men from the village.

“Did you think you had gotten rid of me?”  laughed Jaeger.

“No, your rancid stink was still in the air reminding me that filth like you were still alive,”  he snapped.

He straightened to his full height puffing out his chest as he stepped down onto the ground.  Some of the villagers back up a few steps, but they did not run like he hoped.

“What do you want, Jaeger?”  he asked though he already knew the answer.

“I want you dead,”  sneered Jaeger.

His tiger snarled and pushed to be let out, but he kept it in.

“Die!”  snapped his tiger. “Kill!  Keep mate safe!”

“Over my dead body,”  growled Julia.

He whipped his head around to see his mate stepping down the stairs.  She did not even look at him when she passed.  She just kept her eyes locked on Jaeger and she positioned herself in front of him.

“Julia?”  he whispered softly.

“Shut up, Caspian,”  his mate snapped.

“What in the hell?” sneered Jaeger. “I did not know you had a woman.  Now that changes things completely.  Why don’t I kill you as I use her.  That sounds like a plan doesn’t it.”

He let a low growl bubble from his throat as he stepped forward, but Julia placed herself in front of him.  He wanted to snap at her, but he could not bring himself to do it again.

“You are nothing, but an evil little man that gets off by causing others pain,”  his mate shot back.

Jaeger stood there for a moment unspeaking, astonished that that had come from Julia’s mouth.

“What did you just say?”  Jaeger asked fury apparent in his voice.

“You know exactly what I said and if you do not remove yourself from this property this instant there will be consequences,”  Julia sneered.

He kept his eyes steady on Jaeger.  He knew what this human was capable of and did not want to give him an advantage.

“Leave Jaeger,”  he snapped.

“Kill!”  his tiger growled.

The villagers looked back and forth between his mate and himself, but Jaeger’s eyes never wavered from Julia.  Julia stood her ground glaring back at his rival.

“Why would you give your life for him?” asked one of the villagers. “He is a demon.”

He felt his mate stiffen before him and turn her deadly glare on the villager.

“Because my heart tells me to,”  Julia explained.

He wanted to jump up and down for what his mate had just revealed to him, but he knew better.  So he just stepped a bit closer to her giving her all the support she needed.

Julia could barely control the temper that was boiling centimeters below her skin.  She wanted to strike out like an untaught youth, but she refrained herself.

She watched all the men’s movements expecting them to attack at any moment, but they did not.  They just stood there staring at her as if she was new species that had popped out in front of them.

  “Fire!”  screamed Jaeger.

Her eyes shot to him as startled villager released their arrows.  They flew through the sky straight at her, but she did not give them a second thought.

“You shouldn’t have done that,”  she muttered.

A roar caught her by surprise as Caspian in his tiger form leaped past her right at the villagers.  With one hand she caught Caspian by the nape of the neck jerking him to a stop and the other she waved into the air.  The arrows disincarnated before they were ten feet close to her.

Caspian struggled in her grasp, but never struck at her to get free.  She looked up to see the fear clearly written in the villager’s eyes, but Jaeger was another story.  His eyes were filled with uncontrollable lust as he stared at her.

She glared at him before looking back at the villagers.

“Leave and never come back,”  she snapped.

The second her words slipped from her mouth the villagers were on the move.  They took off in the forest as quickly as their human feet could carry them.

Caspian was still pulling at her grip as the villager ran.

“Shhh…  Easy boy,”  she whispered.

Her voice seemed to have  calmed Caspian a bit so she released her hold.  The tiger growled at Jaeger, but did not move from her side.  Her fingers ran through its soft thick fur as she watched the human before her.

“I said leave,”  she sneered.

She knew that he would not just leave, but she had to give him the chance.

“I told your mate that I was going to kill him as he watched me take you and my plan has not changed.”  Jaeger laughed.

“You are a sick man and your logic is unsound,”  she stated.

“What?”  Jaeger asked.

“I would kill you before you put a finger on Caspian or myself and I can tell you this straight forward,” she reported with a smile tugging at her lips. “I make Caspian look like a new born kitten.  You would never have a chance to take me down.”

She watched as Jaeger’s confidences faded.  He looked at her with the fear she had seen all her life.  Letting her disguise down a bit her eyes began to glow.  She allowed her immortal soul to shine.

She wanted to laugh out when Jaeger eyes bulged from his head.

“What are you?”  he stammered.

“I am your life and death,” she growled. “I am the only reason you still breathe the air around you.  I am an immortal.  I am an angel.  I am your worst fear.”

Without a word Jaeger took off into the woods.  The forest came to life as darklings and catsumys attacked at the hunter.  Jaeger’s screams filled the air, and the taint of blood flowed freely in the breeze.  Then all went quiet.

She looked down at Caspian.  His eyes were looking up at her.

“I told you that I would take care of you,”  she whispered.

Rubbing her fingers through his fur one last time she turned and made her way back into the house.

Caspian could not believe what had just expired here.  His rival was dead and not by his own hand, but that of his mate.  Julia had fought for him when others would have run and she did not dismiss that she was his mate.

“Claim?”  asked his tiger.

“Soon my friend.  Very soon,”  he answered.

His tiger slowly fading back.  He stood and stared after his mate.  Julia was more than he had ever hoped of getting in a mate.

With a huff he followed her into the house.  She was sitting at the table staring at its wood grain.  His heart flip flopped when he saw her like that.

He slowly creped up to Julia and placed his hand on her shoulder.  His mate did not even flinch she just laid her hand over his and continued to stared off into space.

“I’m so sorry,”  Julia finally mumbled.

He pulled her chair out and kneeled before her.

“For what?”  he asked.

She looked up at him.  Tears skimmed around her eyes demanding to be let free.

“You must be so alone,”  Julia whispered.

“No, I have never felt alone, but if you leave me I will,” he stated. “You have dug yourself deep into my heart and I can’t see my life without you.”

His heart pounded in his chest as he waited for her to say something.  When she remanded silent he looked back at her.

The tears that had been unshed where know running down her cheeks.  His mate’s eyes sparkled as a smile spread across her lips.

“Caspian I…..”  Julia began.

“Please don’t say no,” he interrupted.  “I have never felt this was about any woman before.  You are my one and only mate.”

“I…”  Julia began.

Julia stared down at Caspian.  His eyes were filled with worry and nervousness.  Her heart was beating a million miles per minute as he kneeled before her.

He had not told her that he loved her, but he would never do that.  What she had learned theses few days with Caspian was that he did not believe in love at least not the word.

He had said she was his mate and in the demon world that was the closest that he would come to saying he loved her.

“What should I do?”  she asked.

“Follow your heart my daughter.  It will always lead you where you need to go,”  said God.

“But what if it’s wrong?”  she questioned.

“Trust in it and you will never be wrong,”  God sighed.

She looked at Caspian and her heart did not hesitate to give her its answer.

“Yes.  I will stay with you.  I will become your mate.”  she whispered so lightly that she was not sure he heard her.

But she was proven wrong when he scooped her up into his arms.  A giggle flew from her lips as he swung her around and around.

Still holding her Caspian stopped.  Her face was level with his and he took full advantage of that fact.  Caspian’s lips touched her’s with such gentleness that it was like being touched by a butterfly’s wing.

She gasped opening her mouth to his.  He pushed the kiss deeper slanting his mouth on her’s.  It was rough, but she could not bring herself to mind.

She dug her finger nails into his shoulder causing Caspian to purr into her mouth.  She whimpered and clung to him tighter.  Her heart raced and she did not want it to stop.

She jerked her mouth away from his so she could get some must needed air, but that did not deter him.  His lips attached to her neck and began nipping his way down it.

She moaned as she arched her back giving him better access.  Caspian growled vibrating her neck as his teeth lightly locked onto her neck.

She purred deep in her throat and fisted her fingers into his hair.

“Mine!”  Caspian growled.

She squeaked as he nipped her nape.

“Mine!”  he growled more forcefully this time.

“Yours,”  she gasped.

That seemed to be what he needed because he tightened his grip on her holding her in place.

“Mine!”  he screamed into her neck.

Caspian reared back, his fangs lengthening before her eyes.  She had a heart beat of time to feel fear before his fangs stabbed into the meaty part of her nape.

She cried out as the pain whipped through her body.  Her finger nail dug more deeply into Caspian’s body, but he did not seem to notice.

He growled into her neck causing her breath to catch in her throat.  Then the growl turned into a purr and uncontrollable pleasure chased the pain from her body.

She laid there in his arms unmoving as pleasure washed over her.  Caspian continued to purr his fangs still locked in her neck.

“Caspian,”  she whispered.

She threaded her fingers through his hair and gave a light tug.  Caspian’s head came up with out a fight.  His mouth was pink with her blood, but to her he had never looked more beautiful.

“Julia,”  Caspian breathed before his lips where on her’s again.

Caspian could barely control himself.  His tiger purred as he ran his hand down Julia’s back.  Catching her above the knee he lifted her and sat her on the table.

His mate’s legs wrapped around his waist.  He growled into her mouth making her body tremble before him.

Julia’s nails raked his back as if trying to get closer to him.  It hurt a bit, but it seemed to excite him more that his mate wanted him so desperately.

His hand seized her neck and pulled her away from him.  His mate’s eyes were glazed with desire as she looked up at him.  Her tongue grazed over her swollen lips as if trying to lift his taste from them.

“Julia,”  he whispered.

His mate whimpered as he ran his thumb over her bottom lip.  He knew that she would not stop him if he pushed her, but he knew that it was still too soon.

Julia’s feelings towards him were still too fresh, to new to be tested.  He slowly brought her head under his chin and held her to him.  He could feel his mate’s heart beating against his own, and for the first time since his mother died, he felt peace.

“My Julia….  My mate….”  he whimpered.

Carefully he began to rock them back and forth.  His voice was soft and smooth as he calmed his mate.  Slowly he felt both of their hearts being to reseed back to normal.

Julia’s fingers began to loosen their deadly hold on him.  Pulling away slightly he looked down at her.  His mate’s eyes were still a bit glazed, but for the most part back to normal.

At first she would not meet his eyes, but with a bit of coxing, her eyes looked up at him.  He could tell that his mate had never done something like that before and in the back of his mind his tiger roared with ecstasy.

They had been the first male to touch her and by all means would, be the last.

“Mine,”  purred his tiger. “Mate.  Julia.”

He had never felt his tiger more at peace then at that moment.  It just purred and sank into the depths of his mind.

“Yours,”  his mate whispered.

He kissed her forehead and held her tighter against his heart.

Broken Promises

Chapter 3

Caspian shook his head as he watched his mate, the woman that his tiger had chosen for them, sitting in front of him.  Julia’s hair was damp from her resent bath and hanging loosely across her shoulders.  She carefully brushed through every strand until she was certain there were no tangles in sight.

“What?”  Julia asked.

Her voice snapped him out of his trance that he seemed to be under bringing him back to reality.  His eyes snapped to her with such quickness that it made his head spin.  Her wide blue eyes stared at him like two open pools drawing him in.

“Would you stop that?”  Julia asked at bit sheepishly.

He blinked a few times as at least ten seconds went by before he understood her question.

“What?”  he asked.

His mate looked away from him a bright blush sliding across her cheeks.  He wanted so desperately to jump across the table that separated them and claim her right then.  He did not care that they where in his kitchen, all he cared about was making sure Julia never left him.

“Mate,”  his tiger purred.

He could feel his control slipping, but he knew that his tiger would not harm Julia.  It would most likely curl up at her feet and wish to be stroked like a common house cat, but even though he could not bring himself to hate that scenario, he repressed it.

“You are looking at me like I’m a Christmas ham and you are a starving man,”  his mate muttered.

He did not understand the metaphor, but he did not let her know that.  He allowed a devilish grin to snake across his lips as she watched on.  He saw his mate draw in a deep breath and wet her lips with the tip of her tongue.

He knew that she had not meant to tempt him, but every move she seemed to make called out to him.

“You had no idea what I meant, did you?”  his mate asked.

“Not a clue, but you were referring to me so I knew I must have been doing something naughty,”  he answered with a grin still painted on his face.

A giggle spilled from his mate’s lips, but she quickly stifled it.  His heart felt light as he watched Julia.  The way she did not hide her emotions, the way she smiled at the smallest of things, the way she got so angry when he teased her a little, and the way she blushed every time he got to close.

His mate was perfect and he was not even close to being good enough for her.

His tiger rumbled beneath his skin.  It wanted to be let out and let out now.

“Easy boy,”  he whispered to his tiger.

“Mate!”  snapped his tiger. “Must claim now!”

He knew that he would have to let his tiger free soon, but he could hold it off for a few more hours.

“Sorry.  I did not mean to laugh, it was very rude,”  Julia explained.

“Don’t worry about it,” he sighed. “You can laugh at me anytime you want.  To tell you the truth it is quite refreshing.”

“Why do you say that?”  his mate asked.

He looked down at his hands before looking back up at Julia.  He knew that his mate must have been older than himself and seen more than he could even imagine, but she was still so innocent.

“As you can tell the villagers aren’t really keen on demons,” he explained. “My mother was the first demon to come around these parts.  At first they did not know what to do with her and many wanted to throw her out, but a few of the villagers would not allow it because my mother was maybe ten years old.”

He looked up at his mate to see her leaning onto the table engrossed in the tale he was weaving.

“A few of those villagers were the wives of very important shop owners,” he continued.

“They pretty much raised my mother like one of their own.  At least until other demons started showing up,” he stated. “I do not know why they all came upon the village all at once, but soon there were more demons than humans.  The villagers were outraged and tried to send my mother away once more as if she was the cause of their invasion, but once again the shop owners’ wives stopped them.”

“What happened?”  Julia asked.

“Well, the demons kept coming and coming.  But they were not evil demons as the villagers portrayed them as.  Most were farmers or mill workers just like them, but the villagers could not look past their differences,”  he explained.

“When my mother was nineteen a group of demons came upon the village,” he began. “They burned it to the ground just because they could.  They killed and maimed not only the villagers, but the demons as well.  They were led by one man.  He was the strongest of the group and the cruelest.”

He could feel his voice getting rougher, but he knew that he would not scare his mate away so he continued.

“His name was Seth,” he told taking a deep breath. “He was evil in demon form.  He did not care if you where a trained solider or a small child he would kill you the same way.  Nice and slow.  And this demon caught sight of my mother one day.”

“He wanted her for himself so he pursued her.  My mother was a very smart woman and made a plan to use Seth’s lust against him,” he continued. “She slowly got Seth to push the other demons away from the village, but Seth quickly got tired of my mother’s teasing.  But my mother had one more trick up her sleeve.”

“What was it?”  his mate asked almost jumping out of her seat.

“She made a deal with Seth,” he told. “He would get what he wanted from her if he would leave the village and never return.  Seth agreed to her demand and nine months later I was born into the world.”

“Oh my God!”  Julia whispered.

“I was the reason my mother was shunned by all, but one person in the village,” he continued. “I was a reminder of what had happened, and they told me how much they despised me every day of my life.  The one person that did not hate my mother or myself was an older woman named Reina.  She was the only person other than my mother that I allowed myself to get close to.  She was the person that helped my mother give birth to me.  Reina was the first person to hold me in her arms.  The first person that I laid eyes on.”

“She sounds very important to you,”  Julia whispered.

“She was like my grandmother, but human….  She died two years ago,”  he huffed.

He felt a tear skimming around his eyes screaming to be let out, but he repressed it.  He would not show his mate that he was weak.

“I’m so sorry,”  Julia stuttered.

“They would not even let me say good bye,”  he stated.

“Why!?”  his mate asked.

He looked over at her to see blatant rage flowing from her eyes.  His heart beat fast as he saw that she was willing to charge the village for the pain that they had caused him.

“Because they blamed me,”  he explained.

“You were not even born!” Julia exclaimed. “They can not hold you accountable for things that were totally out of your control!”

“They do not blame me for what happened before I was born, though they still hated me for it, but of what happened when I was fifteen,”  he muttered quietly.

“What happened?”  his mate asked.

He looked at her then back at his hands.

“Seth came back,” he explained. “My mother must have known because that day she sent me to town which she never did.  I was supposed to buy some flour because we had run out, but now I know that she was just trying to get me out of the house.  She knew that Seth was coming.”

“What do you mean she knew?”  Julia asked as she sat back down in her chair.

“My mother just knew things,” he continued. “Stuff that no one else should know.  I remember when I was younger, I caught her crying for a woman she had never met.  When I asked her what was wrong, she told me that the woman had died.  She knew before the woman even knew she was dieing.  My mother was a very special woman.”

“Yes, she was,”  agreed Julia.

“Well, as I was gone Seth found my mother.  I don’t know what happened, but my mother was killed that day.  Seth did not leave unharmed though, mother was pretty strong for a female demon.  But not strong enough,” he reported. “She died in my arms and that is why the villagers continue to hate me.  Not only because of who my father is, but because I was unable to protect my mother.”

Julia was silent for a moment before her fury erupted.

“Caspian I am so sorry, but none of that is your fault,” his mate fumed. “You did not ask this man to be your father and you did not ask for your mother to die.  If those villagers can’t see that with their own two eyes they are worthless and not worth the time it took to make them.”

His heart flip flopped in his chest as her words sunk in.  No one had ever cared enough about him to get angry for him.  The feeling of being cared about was new and some what scary, but he liked it.

“Thank you,”  he said.

He watched as Julia’s eyes quickly turned back to normal when he spoke.  It was as if a switch had been turned off in her head because the change was so fast.

“For what?”  his mate asked.

“For caring enough about me to get mad,”  he sighed.

Julia blinked at him.  He could tell that she had not expected him to say that.

“You’re welcome,”  his mate whispered under her breath.

Julia stared up at the dark ceiling as she lay awake in bed.  Her mind was racing a million miles per minute and would not slow down.  She took a deep breath trying to calm her stubborn mind, but it did not seem to help.

Groaning she pushed herself up so she was leaning against the head board.  She rubbed her eyes a few times before she turned to look around the silent room.

It had been two hours since Caspian had showed her to this room, but for some unknown reason she could not bring herself to relax and sleep, and then she saw why.

Two huge Chinkeys, monkey-like darklings, stared at her through the only window that was in the room.  Their purple eyes shown in the unforgiving darkness giving them an eerie sort of feel as their breath steamed the window panes.

One of the Chinkeys lifted up its large hand and tapped three times on the glass with its razor like nail.  She watched as it repeated the taping five times before dropping its hand out of view.

She did not know what the darkling was trying to tell her, but she knew in the back of her mind that it wanted her to come towards the glass.

Slowly she stepped off the bed almost crying out once when her bare feet touched the ice cold floor.  Taking a deep breath she carefully walked towards the window.  Her muscles tensed as she got closer, preparing for any attack the Chinkeys might be planning.

When neither of them moved she relaxed a bit, but still watched for any sign of trouble.  The Chinkeys grunted at her as they swayed their heads back and forth.

One of the Chinkeys bumped its head against the glass clinking one of its two huge tusks which protruded from its bottom lip.

The darklings grunted one last time before jumping from the window ledge to the hard ground below.  They took off across the yard at such a speed she could hardly see them in the moon light.  Soon they had disappeared into the darkness of the forest, only their grunts filled the haunting silence.

She stepped closer to the window and stared out into the night.  Darklings quietly moved before the house minding their own business.  She stood like that for about ten minutes before something moved out of the corner of her eye.

She turned to see Caspian walking from the house with only a pair of pants, which hung dangerously low on his hips, covering him.  His mane of hair glowed in the moonlight as he walked into the open.

Darklings moved out of his way as he walked.  Caspian stopped not even twenty feet from her window.  She knew that he could not see her, so she did not try to hide herself.

She watched as Caspian scented the air drawing it deep into his lungs before releasing it.  His muscles twitch as he scanned his surrounds.  He reminded her of a wild animal searching for prey.

She sucked in a startled breath when he turned to look at her.  She watched as he scented the air once more, but more deeply this time.  Caspian’s eyes seemed to roll back in his head before they locked back with the window.

A smile formed on his perfect lips as he stepped towards her.  Her heart almost stopped when his body blocked the moonlight making her visible to him.

Caspian’s eyes flashed making them slightly glow.  He purred and placed his hand on the glass.  She looked at it for a moment before placing her hand on top of his.

His hand dwarfed her’s.  She felt so small compared to him, it was funny.  She had never felt so insecure about herself in any way before this demon had come into her life.

Know he stood in front of her and she could not form a coherent sentence to save her life.  It was embarrassing.

“Julia?”  Caspian purred.

His hot breath fogged the window as he spoke.  Her heart skipped a beat as she watched his eyes glow brighter.

She did not answer him and could not even if she wanted to.  Caspian though did not seem to notice.  His eyes were locked on her’s and refused to look away.

She was thankful for the glass that separated them because she could not even imagine what might have happened if they had not been apart.

“Julia?”  Caspian breathed again.

She felt her knees losing strength as she watched him.  Her entire body was turning to Jell-O and he was only saying her name.

Trying to calm her over active body she closed her eyes and took a slow deep breath.  She did this at least three times before she was brave enough to open them again, but Caspian was not the first thing she saw.

A huge bangle tiger stared at her through the window.  Its bright green eyes watched her with such intensity that it made her heart jump up into her throat.

It had to be over eight hundred pounds and twice as big as a normal one on Earth.  Its paws were the size of her head and its huge fangs shined in the moonlight.

Its hot breath steamed the window as it watched her, but she did not fear this monstrous beast.  Her heart did flutter, but it was not because she was afraid.  It was because Caspian’s eyes stared out at her from that huge striped face.

“Caspian?”  she whispered.

The tiger purred and rubbed its cheeks against the window before it pushed away from her.  It landed with a groan before it stalked out into the open.

Darklings squeaked and dashed into the forest as if hell itself was licking at their heels.  She watched as the tiger took in what was around him before releasing a loud roar.

The forest came to life with sounds as the roar echoed through the air.  Darklings and catsumys alike dashed from their hiding places for safer quarters.

She could not believe her eyes.  She had known that demons could change their forms into the animal that shared their soul, but she had never seen it done.

It was beautiful and frightening all at the same time.  She could see why many would shun away from such people, but she could not bring herself to mind the transformation.

Maybe it was because demons were so much like her.  Feared for being different, cast out by the people which they had once protected, and taken for grated.  She knew how Caspian could hate the villagers, but she also knew why they feared him.

The tiger’s roar pierced through her thoughts.  She watched as it turned towards her one last time and grunted before charging into the forest behind it.

She stood there unmoving for a minute or two before her body would even think about moving.  Her knees gave out, bringing her to the floor with a thump.  She grunted on impact, but other than that said nothing.

Her mind was working a thousand miles per second and with no hope of slowing down.

“What have I gotten myself into?”  she thought.

She laid down on the cold floor and looked back up at the ceiling.

“Well there goes the neighborhood,”  she whispered out loud.

Caspian’s lungs burned as his tiger jumped over a fallen tree.  For some reason he had let his tiger take over the moment he saw Julia.  He had been thankful when instead of busting through the window his tiger stepped away from their mate.

So he let his tiger run.  Darklings ran beside them as they flew across the ground.  Their paws carried them farther and farther.

His tiger roared out again.  His heart was pounding when his tiger finally came to a stop.  The village was lit with hundreds of torches to keep away the darklings, but it did little to scare him off.

His tiger growled as they watched as Delaney locked up his diner.  It took a great deal of effort to keep his tiger rooted in place and not take after his old human friend.  They watched as he huddled in his large coat and jogged through the abandoned street.

The screams of darklings whipped his tiger’s head back towards the forest.

“Hunter,”  he told his tiger.

His tiger growled low in its throat as it slowly stalked back into the forest.  The scent of fresh blood blew in the wind causing his tiger to snarl under its breath.

He pushed his tiger towards the scent and it went gladly.  Using its powerful back legs it jumped into one of the stronger trees and took off.

They jumped from branch to branch leaving no tracks for the hunters to follow.  The trees did not even quiver as they jumped, just stood strong, as if knowing they had to be silent.  Then before they knew it, they were hovering ten feet above the hunters.

They stank of death and blood as they skinned a young Lumpia, a small cat-like darkling that is the color of freshly fallen snow.

His tiger let out a low growl making the hunters stiffen.  One by one they looked up to see them glaring down at them.

“Caspian!”  snarled one of the hunters.

His tiger focused harder on the one that spoke. The smell of death clung harder to this hunter.  A long angry looking scar ran down from his strong brow to his stubborn chin.  It was Jaeger, a hunter that he had almost killed twice for hunting his darklings.

“What do I owe the pleasure of your company tonight?”  Jaeger asked.

His tiger snarled at the human.  The hair on the back of their neck rose as they hissed at Jaeger one last time.

“Well, I have to say it has been fun,”  laughed Jaeger.

They watched as he dived for his sword.  They were about to leap on him when arrows flew through the air.  They jumped just as they smacked into the tree’s trunk.

One of the arrows grazes his tiger’s side, but they ignored it.  Letting out a roar they leaped.  The ground vibrated when their paws hit the forest floor.

They charged taking down one of the hunter.  The hunter screamed as their fangs punctured his neck.  With one quick jerk they snapped his neck killing him in an instant.

The taste of fresh blood fueled his tiger’s blood lust.  The blood was thick and heavy on their tongue as they licked it off their jaws.

His tiger screamed out when Jaeger’s sword pierced through its hide.  Snarling they reared back knocking Jaeger off balance, but as they went in for the kill the other five hunters were on them.

They cried out when an arrow jammed itself between one of their ribs.  Their cry seemed to break the hold that appeared to be on the darklings.

All at once, darklings poured from the darkness.  Their fangs and claws shone in the moonlight as they attacked.  Blood covered the ground, but they kept on fighting.

His tiger watched as Jaeger ran from the battle leaving his comrades behind.  They could not case after him, so two other darklings gave case.  He knew they would not get Jaeger, but they would at least scare him.

Taking a deep breath his tiger roared into the darkness warning anyone that they were watching.

Julia jumped as one of Caspian’s roars filled the night.

“Father what can I do?”  she asked.

“Do what your heart tells you to do,”  God spoke.

Another roar split through the night causing a shiver to run up her spine.

“Caspian?”  she whispered.

Caspian’s body throbbed as he made his way towards the house.  Dry blood encrusted his body flaking with every step he made.

The arrow still protruded from his side leaving a ghostly reminder of what might have happened.  His tiger groaned, but other than that made no signal that it was still with him.

He heard the front door open and looked up.  Julia stood before him in one of his mother’s old dresses.  The sky blue of the dress made his mate’s eyes pop.

Her hair was down and handing loosing around her shoulders.  It had a slight natural curl to it, but noting like his own.

“Oh my God!” Julia gasped. “What happened?”

Before he could answer her she was at his side.  Now he was glad that he had been injured because his mate touched his naked chest.  Julia’s slender fingers ran over his skin as she checked for more wounds.

“There were hunters,” he answered. “They had already killed a Lumpia before I got there.”

“Why did you go up against hunters?  They are low lives.”  his mate grunted.

“If I don’t stop them, who will?”  he asked.

Julia looked up at him worry apparent in her eyes, but he could see that she understood his logic.  Without answering him his mate tucked herself against his good side and helped him into the house.

“Why are there hunters here?”  Julia asked.

“Not many people care, but darklings are beginning to die off.  Many people hunt them because they are supposed to be more dangerous then catsumys, but that is not true.  Yes they will attack you, but that is because every time a darkling sees a person, human or demon, that person will try to kill them.”

“Why?”  she asked.

She stopped in front of the table, but with the grip Julia had on his arm he could not sit down.

“Because due to some twist of fate, some darklings are the most beautiful creatures on Ventra,”  he continued.  “Many very powerful people believe that if they have the coat of such a deadly beast people will believe that they are dangerous as well.”

Carefully Julia lowered him into one of the kitchen chairs.  After gathering some supplies his mate hunkered down beside him so her face was level with the arrow.

“This might hurt a bit,”  Julia warned.

“I’m used to pain,”  he grunted.

His mate’s eyes locked with his for a split second before she looked back down at the wound, but it was long enough for him to the see the sadness that filled her eyes.

“You shouldn’t have to be,”  his mate whispered.

Her words touched him, but before he could tell her how much she jerked the arrow for his body.  A string of curses a mile long flew from is mouth before he could stop them.

A steady stream of blood flowed from his body.  He watched as his mate carefully doctored and bandaged his wound.  She then turned her attention to a few burses and scrapes that covered his body.

“I’m sorry that I can’t heal you, but it is beyond my knowledge,”  Julia explained.

“It’s fine,” he said. “I’m still better off with you.”

The smile that he received from her was almost worth all the pain he had endured.  His tiger purred in agreement before it settled back down.

“Where are these hunters now?”  Julia asked all of a sudden.

He looked at her to see she was not looking at him, but at her hands.

“All are dead except for one, Jaeger,” he answered. “He is the nastiest of the group and the only one that has escaped me three times.”

“Good,”  was all his mate said.

He watched as she picked up and started to rinse the blood out of the cloth she had used.  As he watched his mate he could not believe that she was an immortal.  At that moment she looked like any woman.

 “Julia?”  he asked.

His mate stopped what she was doing and looked back at him.

“Yes?”  she asked.

“Will you stay here?”  he asked.

He held his breath for her answer.  He knew what he was asking her and was terrified that she would refuse him.
